I think it's more useful to develop one's own study guides

I totally agree. I never use study guides: just the official training book by Microsoft which covers more in depth issues than any study guide. I mention this because lots of those who are in surch of dumps, only use study guides - that's bad as their knoledge is limited to that guide.
In my opinion, the most fiable getting certified solution is:
1) read the exam book written and approved by the issuing certification corportion(Microsoft,Cisco,Sun,Oracle books) to get an idea of the whole;
2) go one again through the book hanf in hand with practise;
3) read dumps and go for it...

I like study guides, but only to review some things, althoug it is tru that the official book covers in more depth the topics.

There is so many study guides available that it is hard to say which is best. I can tell you this that I have sit trough all the MCSE courses that I wanted to write and then used Sybex study guides along with hours of playing with the product. Have never failed an exam and I feel comfortable that my expertise is quite good for the real world, not just for passing an exam. In the end all the exams come together to paint a rather nice picture. But I do agree, if you buy the self study guide from microsoft, you probably get more value for your money.
